My name's Amy. Love it. Happy Mother's Day from your favorite son, Kimmy. Hey, favorite son. Awesome. All right, cool. That's it. All right. Love it. Happy Mother's Day to everybody. Come on. All right, we are back in Ephesians and let me give you a quick recap. We we started Ephesians last week uh for the first time uh or for the first part of it. We did we did verses one through six and now we're going to hit verses 7 through 14. And again, I know I'm taking this in big chunks. And I could very easily go like every single word in every single verse and go Greek on you and do the whole thing, but let the Holy Spirit speak to you this week. When you go back and and read this, I really want us to to make it a focus that throughout the week we're meditating on these scriptures because there's so much here and there's so much that I can't like unpack in in how many? 3 hours. I I have three hours to preach now. Here we go. No, I'm kidding. But like in 40 minutes, 30 minutes, like it's it's hard to unpack all of this. So, I'm kind of just going to breeze through it, but my prayer is that the Holy Spirit would reveal some really deep stuff to you throughout this week that that there's going to be revelation that takes place in your heart. Um, but last week we just a quick recap, we talked about that we can bring joy to God. that when we revel in his grace and we are filled with joy of understanding the grace that's been given to us so undeserved but when we revel in this and and we're full of joy it brings joy to God. How cool is this? Like we can actually bring a smile to God's face because of the joy that that we recognize that God you saved me. Like this is this is awesome. And and this is really what what takes place during worship, right? when we're when we're singing songs like how great is our God. There was joy that I mean the room shifted. I don't know if you felt it but God was moving during worship because there our hearts were aligned with this joy like how great is God? How awesome is he? And and this is such a cool thing that we can we can understand. We've been chosen. We've been adopted predestined to be sons and daughters. Again, that unearned grace. And and I love this. We we we sang the song, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus and the things of earth go strangely dim." It's so true. When when Jesus is our focus, all of the the the sin and all of the the things that we used to to bring pleasure to ourselves that were sinful, they become unattractive. When when Jesus is is our focus, everything else just begins to fade away. And and and and just for a quick disciplehip like thing really like in this when God is our focus every single day, not just not just on Sundays, but every single day, it's going to be really hard for you to live in sin. But but again, if he's only your God on Sundays, Monday through Saturday is just fair game for us. But when he is the focus of our of our worship every single day, that those things become unattractive. they become unappealing. What what used to bring you pleasure, it does it doesn't bring that anymore. That's what we talked about last week. Let's dive into this. And and and before we get into this, I kind of want to give us this this quick setup. It's so important when we're reading scripture and when we're studying the word of God, there's this word hermeneutics. It's it's how you study the word of God. Often times we read scripture and we make it about us where we go, how does this apply to me or how do I fit in here or how does my story align with this story and all the things and again some of those things that's that's a good way to look at scripture like how does this apply to me like application is good right there's there's growth that needs to take place but when we are the focus when we are the center of the universe in our relationship to God we're missing out on who God is we're missing out on his character and and and who he who he wants to be to us. His character, his plans, who he is, what he does, and what he wants to do in us and through us. When we're the when we're the center focus, we're we're reading scripture oftentimes without the Holy Spirit because it's this is just what I what am I getting out of this versus what does the spirit want to speak? What does God want to say here? So, when we read this, it's important to notice there's a subject and there's an object. Y'all remember like in grade school, we had to read those sentences and determine what the subject and the object was. Like, Johnny has five apples, right? Johnny's the subject, the apples are the object, right? Or Johnny has five apples and he ate two. How many oranges does Johnny have? Johnny is the subject and the really bad math problem is the object. Right? Right. Okay. So again in this subject as we get into this ready we are not the subject. God is the subject. We are the object. Ready? Let's read this. Ephesians 1 7-14. In him in him he is the subject. We have redemption through his blood. forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight. Again, he lavished he lavished upon us the subject we are the object in which he's lavishing his grace upon making known to us the mystery of his will according to his purpose, not our purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him, who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. in him. You also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory. Come on, God. I pray you bless this word. Holy Spirit, you're in the room right now. Speak to us. reveal to us what needs to shift in our mind, in our hearts, in our lives in order to live this word out. That this wouldn't just be scripture and stories and in a book, but it would become life to us. It would become bread to us. In Jesus name we pray. Everybody said, "Amen." God is the subject. He's lavishing all of his grace upon us. He is the focus here. It's it's his plan. It's his inheritance that he's giving to us. We are the object of his affection. We are the object of of of his grace that he's he's giving to us. And again, it's unearned. It's undeserved. You you've done nothing to earn it. But again, usually in life, we are the subject, right? I am the focus. I'm the captain now. You know, like I decide my schedule. I decide who to be friends with. I decide where to get a job. I decide what to do today. I decide to follow Jesus, right? I decide to read the Bible. Everything's about me. It's my decisions. I chose to do this. And again, sometime sometimes it's really hard to read the Bible when it's not about us. When we look at our in our in our our faith walk and it's not about us, it it that there's something that that that resists in us. And and it also it feels strange to be the object in the story, right? The recipient of something that we did not earn. The grace of God can be hard for us to grasp. We like to earn things, right? We nailed the job interview, right? I did it. Me, myself, I earned the promotion. I bought the house, right? or we attribute whatever it is in our life to our own effort. And culture is constantly telling us that you are the master of your destiny, right? That you are in control, you make things happen. So when we read things like he chose us or he predestined us or he lavished his grace upon us there. I don't know about you but there's something in me that kind of resists it where it's just like I didn't I didn't earn this. Like I didn't do anything. I can't believe this. Like where's the where's the string attached to this gift? Right? Like what what's the catch? Like what what's going on here? And we want to say, I chose Jesus, right? I made him the Lord of my life. It was my decision. And that's true. I'm not negating that. I'm not saying that it wasn't your choice. But we have to remember that God chose you first. That's right. God chose us. God chose me. And it's kind of wild again to to look at his grace. I I I haven't been doing this. My wife has really gotten into watching a lot of really old like TV shows. Remember when reality shows were just like huge? Remember Extreme Home Makeover? That TV show back in the day? Move that bus. You know, they'd come in, they would they would have hundreds of people. They'd demo a house for this family who didn't do anything to like earn this or or maybe maybe it was like some it was just a lottery or whatever it was, but like they they got this amazing house. like they were living they were living in trash before and now they're living in a mansion, right? And it's just like this this absolutely undeserved grace and blessing. And it's the same thing with us that that his grace is poured out upon us and before we were dead in our sin, but now we're alive in Christ. How awesome is this? Move that bus. God, look at all you have for me. It's incredible. And again, it flips this mindset and and and and I'm not knocking anybody who's been in this place because I I've been in this place where I read the word of God and I go, I deserve this because the word of God says I deserve it. But it flips to a heart of I deserve nothing, but because of his grace, I've been given everything. This is the shift. It's it's it's a hearts set and it's it's a mindset that needs to to change in our life and in our relationship with the Lord when we recognize this that his grace then becomes a revelation, a revelation of his plan for us and his plans for us become even more clear when we when we can come to that place of of of letting our lives be a dwelling place for his presence. a dwelling place for him. Say this with me again. God is the subject. God is the subject. We are the object. Verse eight, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ. So one way that he lavishes his grace upon us is he makes known to us the mysteries of his will. This is really cool. He lets us know what he's doing. When we when we live in that that state of of dwelling, letting him letting his grace dwell within us and that joy within us and we have that relationship with us, he lets us know what he's about to do. And some of you are like, "What? What are you talking about?" It's in his word and I and I've seen it in my own life. If you go to Amos 3:7, it says this right here. For the Lord does nothing without revealing his secrets to his servants and prophets. Are we not his servants? Are we not his sons and daughters? In the Old Testament, God always told the prophets and and and the people that were following him, Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, and so many others, he always told them what he was about to do and then he would do it. And this is this is the the the mysteries of his will being uh given to us and shown to us. He's still doing this today in prayer, in worship, in scripture, and in prophecy. Before he does anything, he speaks. And I don't know why he does it this way, but I like to think that he wants us to see his glory and recognize that he's in it. When he says, "I'm about to do this." and then he does it. Wow. Like it's one thing to to see God do something or there's some miracle that takes place and it's like, wow, this is amazing. But when he speaks to you and says, I'm about to unleash my glory upon you or I'm about to heal this person or I'm about to see I'm going to bring forth a miracle that you weren't expecting in this moment. And then when it happens, the faith that builds in that moment is unmatched. It's powerful. Before he does anything, he speaks to us. And it makes me wonder sometimes, maybe God isn't doing anything because we're not listening. Can I say that again? Maybe God is not doing anything in your life right now because you're not listening. And so maybe it's not that he's he's not doing stuff, you're just not recognizing it. And if you would just sit and listen and allow him to speak to you and then he does the thing, man, God wants to show us what he's about to do. He has a plan and he's consistently sharing this plan with us. And here's the plan. You ready? We have the plan. It's in the word of God. Verse 9, making known to us the mystery of his will according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ. Here it is. Verse 10. As a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. This is deep. Y'all ready? Here's the plan. In the fullness of time, God is going to unite all things in Christ. What does that mean? That means that the the secular and the sacred will become sacred. That doesn't mean that secular things are now going to be good. It just means that there's going to be unity in Christ in all things. And that's his plan for this world. That's his plan for us, that we would come into unity with Christ, that heaven would come to earth. And what's so incredible is it's happening right now. He's lavishing his grace upon us. He's he's chosen us in his plan again that all things would come together in unity. the sacred and the secular that there would no longer be division. When did God make this plan? Before the foundation of the world. Remember, he chose us before the foundation of the world. We are part of this plan that through Jesus that we would bring heaven and earth together. It's kind of wild that we're a part of this plan. It's kind of funny. Have you ever um have you ever been told what the plans are for something? Some of y'all are laughing cuz you know like Yeah. Yeah. Like hey honey, guess what? We're going out to dinner with this with this couple. And I was like who? Like when what? It's like it's been on the calendar. Like I didn't know. Right. like like when someone makes plans and just automatically includes you in those plans, right? And it's just like, okay, I guess I guess this is the plan now. Like, and it's so funny because we we look at this and I was just I made a joke too in here about like, oh, I'm going to the store. Watch your kids. And I was like, my kids? No, I'm sorry. Yeah, they're our kids. And God has a plan. And guess what? He never asked us about it. like he didn't ask for your opinion. How does that make you feel? It doesn't matter. He didn't need your opinion to make this plan. He just said it. This is what I'm going to do. Why? Because he's the subject. He's the boss man. And again, this plan is it's a blessing. It's grace. It's forgiveness. He's going to unite heaven and earth. And it's all through Jesus. I love this in Colossians 1:15. He is the image of the invisible God. Jesus, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things. And in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the cross. Everything that was made was created in Jesus by him and for him. And again, here's just take a step back from the word of God here for a second. Go Old Testament. Adam and Eve chose rebellion. Remember last week we talked about it. The plan from the beginning is that we would dwell with the Lord, that there would be no sin, that nothing could separate us from him, right? But Adam and Eve, they chose rebellion. Sin enters the world and then dominion over the world was handed over to Satan. Now, I just it's kind of interesting because when you look at the New Testament and you look at this, there's this really cool moment that takes place where Jesus is in the desert for 40 days and Satan comes to tempt him, right? I don't have the scripture on the screen, but this is just a side note. Here are my notes. That's really cool. And and the devil is tempting him and saying, "Look at all these kingdoms. It look at all these dominions. If you would bow down and worship me, I can give them to you." And guess what? He could because he had authority and dominion because of sin. But here's what's awesome. When Jesus died on the cross for each and every one of us, he took the keys of authority from the enemy. By his blood, we were set free. It was by his blood and his sacrifice. And now in the name of Jesus, we have authority. Now, in the name of Jesus, I can resist the devil and he will flee. Come on. We're we're fighting a different devil right now. Right? We can look at the Old Testament and we see all these moments and these interactions with the enemy and all these dominions and evil kings and all of these things. It's because Satan had dominion and authority in that day. But because of Jesus, we now have authority. Because of Jesus, we can now stand firm on him. Come on. We're we're we're fighting a weaker devil today because we have power and authority in Jesus. It's so it's so awesome. I'm sorry. Side note. Come on, somebody. We have authority through Christ Jesus. Let me I'll say this, too. If the devil is moving in power in an area, it's because someone has not stood on their authority. Hey, somebody. Jesus's death and resurrection on the cross was part of the plan. It was part of the plan. Remember verse 20 in Colossians. And through him to reconcile to himself all things whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. Now heaven is invading earth because of the blood of Jesus. It's happening now. It's always been about Jesus from the Old Testament to today. And again, Ephesians shows us that we are not the subject. It's not about us. And we and again, we need to learn how to live our lives as objects of his grace. When when this can shift in our hearts and when we stop saying like, "God, what's what's your plan for me?" And I' and I've been there. I've I've preached that like God has a plan for your life. He does. But it's not different than this plan. it's going to fall in line with his plan. If if you feel like you have a plan for your life, that God has a plan for your life, and it doesn't fall in line with this, it's not from the Lord. Can I say that? I'm saying it. Ephesians 1 11-12. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him, who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. It doesn't say in him we're earning an inheritance. This isn't a 401k that we're putting away for. We all we already have earned what we've already been given it. We've already earned it. It's already done. Not because of anything I did. It says that we already have it. We've already inherited it as believers. Those who follow Jesus, those who believe in him. I'm going to I'm going to butcher this name and it's not on the screen. So, you're just going to trust that this is how you pronounce this Greek word here. But that word inheritance is chloro nomia. And it actually means it means inheritance. It means heritage and it means legacy. And in the context of all the scripture, it actually refers to an eternal inheritance. Again, sometimes we think like what's being what is this? What is this tangible thing being given to me? It's eternal. It's it's it's in heaven and it's within us. Like you're not going to see a bunch of zeros show up on your bank account when you start following Jesus. And I love this too where he talks about, you know, the counsel according to the council of his will. It's kind of funny that to think that God needs counsel, but it's the counsel of his will. It's his will and his plan that's already been it. Everything goes back to his will. It's not that he needs somebody to counsel him. It's that he has a plan and he's sticking to the plan. He doesn't adjust according to culture or even our counsel. God doesn't do things because they are right in our eyes. He does things. And because he does it, it's right. Dr. G. Campbell Morgan said this. Our God is a God who not only wills, he works. And he works according to his will. The word council stands for deliberate planning and arranging in which the ways and means of carrying out the will are considered and provided for. Here's what this means. God has a will for this world. He has a will and a plan for us. And everything that we need in order to fulfill this will he has for us. He's already made a plan for it that we would have all that we need in order to accomplish his will. and that is that all things would come together in unity with Christ. That's the plan that we carry out this plan. He makes a way back to Ephesians 1:13 that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. I love this. because he's so rich in mercy and abounding in steadfast love, he died for us and now heaven's available to us. So when it's talking about the praise of his glory, it's talking about heaven. That for the rest of our days, we get to worship him. For the rest of our days, we get to praise him and we get to lift him up where there's no more death, where there's no more sickness and we're just constantly praising him for his glory. This is all part of the inheritance that's laid out before us. I know for some of us though when we're pondering this inheritance in heaven with in our hearts, his grace, the Holy Spirit and power. We hear about adoption that we've been chosen, all these things. And maybe again we resist it. There's a resistance in that. I I just need to tell you the greatest theft that's ever taken place within the church are the lies that steal away your knowledge of this truth. Where the enemy comes in and questions us. Again, he can't take it from you, but he'll make he he'll try to get you to stop believing it. He'll say, "Did God really save you? Then why don't you act saved?" Right? Are you actually free? Why do you still struggle with this? That did God actually give you an inheritance or is this just some verse that you read and now you're just like, I'm standing on this. Yeah. Is the Holy Spirit really in you or is it just a feeling when they play that song? Did God really say XYZ? This is what happened in the garden with Adam and Eve. When the devil goes to tempt Eve, he says, "Did God really say?" And that's what he continues to do today. The lies that call into question who God always meant you to be. And we hear those things and then we we step back for a second and we stop living this life. We hear these lies or or we compare the truth that we know to our perceived reality and circumstances and we say, "Something does is not lining up here." here and we and we come into moments of of worship and we can sit here and or stand here and we can feel shame and condemnation for all the mistakes that we've made. Right. And and we disqualify ourselves from the grace that God sacrificed his son to give us and we cease our praise and our prayer and our passion for him begins to fade. And and sometimes we lose faith. It's like getting a fight with your spouse. Hear me out. For those of you that are married, or maybe maybe you're not married and you've been in an argument like this before, where one side we care about the facts. This is what happened. And the other side is like, it's not about the facts. It's about how the facts made me feel or how you made me feel when you presented those facts to me. Right? It may be true, but I don't like how you said it. I don't like your tone. Right? Somebody, I'm preaching. I'm preaching. But here's the thing. In my house, this flips. This goes both ways because then I won't say who's who, but you know, whatever. When one side starts getting away from the feelings and gets back to the facts, then the other side goes, "Well, I didn't like the way you made me feel about that." Right? And it's this fight back and forth of here's the truth and here's the reality, but here's how I feel about that truth and reality. And again, then it it it doesn't matter what the truth is. It only matters how I feel. And we're fighting. We're speaking two different languages in this. and and so many of us even in our faith, we're we're fighting between the the soul and the mind, what I know to be true and and and how I feel about it. And there's this there's this division, this dichotomy between these two things. And again, it it takes maturity as believers to to understand that the enemy wants to steal this inheritance from us. But again, he can't do it, right? But he will talk you out of believing it. He's okay with you knowing the truth as long as you don't allow the truth to set you free. Read your Bible all you want. As long as it doesn't change you, go for it. You might be reading the truth, but you're believing a lie. James 2:5, here's the truth. Listen, my beloved brothers. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs in the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him. Romans 8:16-1 17 the spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And if children then heirs heirs of God and fellowairs with Christ. We are fellow hes with Christ provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. This is this is wild that we are hes and daughters of God. Boom. But again, it's Mother's Day and my mom did a beautiful job speaking to all the sides of motherhood because many of us struggle with this truth oftentimes because of our upbringing. We struggle with the idea of being an heir with Christ. Again, undeserved grace. Our families shape our view of this inheritance because may maybe you inherited like a really good work ethic from your family, some good morals, or maybe a family member died and you you got some money or some property. You inherited your dad's nose, your uncle's laugh, your mom's hair, or maybe like a weird aunt's crazy eyes. You know, none of my aunts are here today, so you know, some inherit love and support, but a a lot of us may have inherited trauma, drama, daddy, mama issues, bad habits, dysfunction, tendencies, mental stress, and struggles. A lot of us have been let down. People who were meant to love you, protect you, even lead you, lied to you, abused you, hurt you, stole from you. Maybe you were made promises that were then quickly broken. And it's again, it's hard to believe God's grace and inheritance if you haven't seen it for yourself or experienced it or it hasn't hit your bank account. Happy Mother's Day. Moms don't always get it right. Moms fail. Moms break promises and break hearts. Except for my mom, cuz she's perfect. But broken people break people. But here's what's true, and here's what's awesome. God's not broken. I need a bigger amen for that. God's not broken. Come on. Listen, in God's word, he promised that we're heirs of his kingdom. If he said it, it's true. If he said it, it's it's it's it's a promise to us. We're fellows with Christ. We've obtained an inheritance. We have been redeemed. We've been chosen before the foundation of the world. Did God really say? Yes, he did. He said it. And we we we don't doubt the word of God because it's never failed. That's right. He won't fail. He won't. Check this out. Here's the proof of our inheritance. I'm wrapping up. G verse 13. In him, you also when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory. So until we pass away and sail on to heaven, we have the Holy Spirit. We've been marked. We've been sealed. Here's here's the Those who believe the gospel because of God's great love towards us. When we were dead in our sin, he made us alive in Christ. Right? Through Jesus on the cross, we were redeemed. He died on the cross. He rose from the grave. Power over death he showed us and it was finished. Authority taken from the enemy and handed over to us. When we believe this, were marked. When we believe this, we're sealed by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee, the the down payment of our inheritance. It's the proof that we can bring heaven to earth in Christ through the power of his Holy Spirit. And let me just let me be real here. We believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit here. Wisdom, discernment, tongues, prophecy, healing, prayer, faith, miracles. If it happened at his word, it's happening today. Amen. We believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But the gifts of the Holy Spirit are are not what he's talking about here. It's not the focus. It's not the subject. Speaking in tongues, getting prophetic visions, and then they come true. Like all that stuff, laying on the hands and seeing people healed in Jesus name. Like, it's awesome. It's incredible. But here's the problem for for many of us. We go, "Well, how come I haven't healed anybody?" Or or we say, "I I've never performed a miracle. I I haven't seen the supernatural in this way. How come I don't speak in tongues?" Again, the gifts of the spirit from the baptism of the Holy Spirit are for the body of Christ and to evangelize the world. Remember in Acts when they were all together in the upper room and the Holy Spirit came and the baptism of the Holy Spirit came and the gifts of the spirit began to open up. That's not what this is talking about here. It's saying when you believe in Christ, you were sealed by the Holy Spirit. Now, the Holy Spirit dwells within you. It's not about the the gifts of the spirit in this moment. It's about what he's about to do within you. Again, the primary purpose of the Holy Spirit is what? To fulfill God's will and his plan. And his plan is to bring all things together in Christ and make make all things holy and blameless. That heaven and earth will become one. That there would be no more sin, there' be no more death. So, if we're going to become one in Christ, sin cannot dwell within us. And when the Holy Spirit is is dwelling within us and working within us, fruit comes. When the Holy Spirit is dwelling within you, when you've been marked by him, you cannot remain in sin. It doesn't mean that you won't sin, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to stay there. He'll keep talking to you. He was like, "Hey, you know, you know who you're supposed to be. There's fruit that needs to grow in your life, and I'm going to I'm going to do it within you. Let let me dwell within you. Again, I'll make the things of this earth grow strangely dim. Just let me be let become a dwelling place for the spirit." Again, we used to go on and sin and feel nothing. In Ephesians 2, we'll get to this later, it talks about this, but you just do whatever you whatever feels good, right? We're following the passions of our of our body and our mind. Whatever brings me pleasure, gives me some kind of gain on this earth. And then in Galatians 5:19, it says, "Now the works of the flesh are evident. sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
