In Ephesians 5:1-21, the message centers on walk in love, light, and wisdom. Explore Ephesians 5:1–21 and learn what it means to imitate God, walk in love and light, live wisely, and be filled with the Spirit. Rather than treating the passage as abstract theology, the sermon traces what these truths reveal about God, the gospel, and the way followers of Jesus are called to live.
The sermon follows the biblical text into practical discipleship, connecting doctrine with identity, character, and daily obedience. It challenges listeners to examine the assumptions shaping their lives and to allow the truth of Scripture to renew the way they think and respond. The emphasis is not merely on understanding the passage, but on becoming the kind of people whose lives are formed by it.
Along the way, the message engages themes including Ephesians 5:1-21, walk in love, light, and wisdom. These ideas help place the primary passage within the larger story of Scripture and show how its theology speaks to real spiritual formation. At its heart, the sermon helps answer questions such as: What does Ephesians 5:1-21 teach about walk in love, light, and wisdom? It also considers how should walk in love, light, and wisdom shape the way Christians live?
For someone studying this passage, exploring the Christian faith, or looking for practical biblical teaching, this sermon offers a clear path from the text to everyday discipleship. The invitation is to hear what Scripture says, receive it with humility, and take the next faithful step in following Jesus.

Last week we uh we finished up Ephesians and uh we kind of hit on this fun phrase and this fun verse talking about grieving the Holy Spirit and the call to not grieve the Holy Spirit. And uh it's it's kind of funny because this is this is probably maybe a little sacrilege to to say, but sometimes when I think of grieving, I think about one of my small children having an emotional breakdown at the fair. This happened yesterday actually. And uh just like crying and and whining to try to get their way. And I think sometimes when we think of grief or you know obviously there's there's terrible things that happen and we grieve over those things. But for whatever reason my mind went to this picture of one of my children just whining and crying. And I and I want to I don't know if anyone else feels this way or felt this way but I want to speak to like God is not this whiny deity in heaven crying and complaining every single time we reject him. like he's not this emotional toddler up in heaven, but there is a a deep level of love that he has for us when he grieavves. And the when the spirit of God grieavves, he grieavves because we turn away from him. He grieavves because we choose something other than him. And I I I heard a song recently that was just like it it just shifted my whole reality. But what would it feel like for someone you love to run into someone else's arms? What would it feel like for your spouse or someone that you hold dear just completely turns from you and and runs after somebody else? And that level of grief is the grief that that I've been wrestling with when I read that verse. And as we as we get into this this message today, we we need to understand that Jesus loves us. Yes. But his heart breaks. That love just just is heartbroken every single time we turn from him. And again, it's not because he's some whiny whiny god. It's because he knows what lies ahead for us when we turn from him. And I'm not going to I'm not going to debate, you know, I one of my really good friends uh about a year ago cut me off as a friend because he I think I've said this before. He's he no longer believes in hell. No longer believes that that there is anything awaiting anyone at the end other than heaven and being with God. and that why would God send anybody to hell? And I and I told him I was like, "No, God's not sending you. We're rejecting God and we're choosing a life of endless separation from him." You know, I I I know we have pictures of the lake of fire and the inferno and all the all these things, but and and and I'm not debating the the scripture, but if there is no hell and it's just eternal darkness and complete separation from God, that would be a hell to me. Whether I'm burning in a lake of fire or I'm in endless darkness and I never get to be with Jesus, like that is hell. And and it's and it's that's why his heart breaks for us is because he does not want us to live in that separation. He wants to wrap his arms around us. He wants us to choose him. Amen. >> So, as we get into Ephesians 5 today, we're going to read a lot about purity and and really that purity connects to God's plan for us. And uh it's really interesting because I I've I've started As I got into this and I'm reading about purity and all these things, like it's very easy to kind of go back into my youth group days when we had to wear like purity rings. Anybody wear a purity ring in the house? Lift the hands high. Come on. I know a couple of you. Praise God. All right. ' 80s, 90s, early 2000s youth group. Let's go. But there was like this sort of, you know, commitment that we made to live a pure life. And it was almost like, at least for me, it it almost like increased the temptation even more because it's like here I am and I'm making this declaration and this commitment and it's not because I I wasn't making the commitment because I loved God. It I was making the commitment because I was trying to abstain from from sex. I was trying to abstain from these these things, right? And and when I when I look at God talking about purity, Paul talking about purity here, it all connects to his plan from the very beginning of time. When when Adam and Eve were in the garden and uh they were hanging out with God and they had all this dominion, all these things, God was walking with them in the garden. They were they were together. There was this dwelling together, you know, God among us time in the garden that was just beautiful. It was powerful. and and that's what it's going to be like for us one day when we when we come together with him. But when we look all throughout the Old Testament and even into the the New Testament in the life of Jesus, there's this progression of God trying to get the people that are following him close to him. There's the building of the temple uh at the tabernacle that that Moses put together. And there were all of these specifications that God was making that the curtains had to be this way. There had to be gold here. There had to be, you know, these different courts. There's the outer court, the inner court, and then the middle and all these different things. When we read in the Old Testament, sometimes it's like, what is going on here? Is this how we're supposed to do church now? Like, it it can be it can be really interesting. But what I continue to see is God's desire for a pure place that he can dwell with his people. there. God does not tolerate impurity. All throughout the Old Testament and even through the New Testament, you know, now we have the new covenant and Jesus has come. He washed my sins away and it and and it's beautiful. There's salvation. But there's this invitation now to look at these specifications that are given like we would look at the temple. Like when Solomon built the temple, there was all this ornate gold and all these things. Again, all of these very specific specifications that that God required in order for his presence to come down like a fire and fill that place. And if if those specifications were not met, he was not going to come down. If a if a priest walked into the Holy of Holies and they were impure, they would drop dead. They used to like tie bells around their feet and if they heard the bells stop, they knew, "Oh, he's dead." And they would tie a rope to him. They had to drag him out of the Holy of Holies. Read your Bible. It's in there. It's awesome. God desires purity. And I think so often we feel maybe we feel like God is is not present in our lives or not speaking or not moving. And I think the the greatest sign to us of what he's trying to say is there's an area in your heart that's impure. Let's let's work on purifying it so I can dwell within you. Because again, he's not going to tolerate impurity. Again, the the glory of God fills the tabernacle. comes down in fire and consumes these sacrifices. Even the sacrifices that had to be brought, the animal sacrifices, they had to have no blemishes. It had to be completely pure and they had all these specifications. But then in the New Testament, we have Jesus and he becomes the perfect pure sacrifice for our sins. The veil of the temple was torn. There's no more temple. And there's this now this this beautiful connection that we can have where where God is saying, I don't want to just dwell within a place. I want to dwell within you. And when we look throughout Ephesians, the the these first four chapters that we've hit, it's really the blueprint for how we can now become a dwelling place for the spirit of God. Not just on Sundays when we gather together, but every single day. His desire is to come and be with us and dwell within us. And we can have that relationship with him. And it's beautiful and it's powerful again. And and we get a glimpse of this in the upper room in in Acts when when Jesus says, "I have to go so that my spirit can come." And it's it's really great. It's it's to your advantage that the spirit comes because he's not just going to be this singular person in a physical body, but he's going to be everywhere. and he can move within all of you and and give you boldness and power and and move in all these ways and and help you be transformed to become more like Jesus, to become more like him. And we see this when the spirit of God comes, you know, they were all together. They were all in one place. And it says they were all in one accord, which means they were in unity and in purity together. And then the spirit of God fills the room and there's tongues of fire over top of each one of their heads. Like I think that's awesome. And I and I truly believe that we can be that dwelling place for him as a church. Like that's that's my heart's desire that not just again we want that individual encounter. Yes. But there's something special. The Bible tells us when we gather together, when two or three are gathered together in his name, there he is. Well, what would it look like as a church for us to come together in such unity and in such purity that God shows up and goes, I never want to leave this place. I never want to leave because the the there's so much purity here. This is a pure sacrifice for me. It's this it's this aroma that scripture talks about especially in Psalms that our worship is pleasing to him and that when we gather together something powerful happens. We are now the temple again. The old covenant fire was falling on a pure sacrifice and now we get to the new covenant and now we have fire falling on a living sacrifice. you and me, we are the temple. We are the church. And we are meant to be a dwelling place for God. So again, as you've as you've been going through and going back through Ephesians, and it's talking about the heart, it's talking about purity. It's talking about all these things. And even as we're going to read today, we can we can find ourselves in a place where we start to pretend or we can find ourselves in a place where we're trying to do all of these things like I'm trying to stay pure. I'm trying to not live a sinful life. But if we're not doing that from a place of purity and a place of love and a place of relationship with God, it's going to feel like religious works, right? Like it's going to feel like, oh, I'm trying not to sin versus I love God so much I can't sin. See the difference there? And and again when when it's constantly striving on our own without connection to God, that's where we get so much religious practice and we get legalism and we get all these things and it feels like you know am I in relationship with God or you know am I just am I just a slave and a whipping boy and I and I'm doing all the things wrong all the time. I want to read this out of uh 2 Corinthians 3:12. I'm kind of skipping around. I'm hitting 12-4, then 17-18, just because it's a long amount of scripture. Again, this is kind of talking about the relationship between this old covenant and and the new. Verse 12. Since we have such a hope, we are very bold. Not like Moses who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the Old Covenant, that same veil remains unlifted because only through Christ is it taken away. Here's what it's saying. Moses had an encounter with God where he he God lets him see the back of him and he is so changed that his face is just like beaming to to have seen God in this way just just just for a moment completely changed his face where he had to wear a veil over it because people would get blinded by looking at him because the glory of God was coming off of him so greatly. And so there's this veil that is put over the presence because really what he's saying is like you can't handle this. You can't handle the the glory of of of what took place on Moses. And he's talking about that now where there's a shift that's taking place where now because of Jesus, we don't have to cover up the presence of God. We don't have to put a veil over him and say, "Okay, you got to do all of these things first and then you can experience God." It's like, no, the veil is being pulled out here. It says now in verse 17, now the Lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is what? Freedom. Come on. And we all with unveiled face beholding the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the spirit. So what he's saying here is now because of Jesus, we can now behold God. We can now come face to face with him in in in our continued growth and and growing in the word and all these things. And it's because of the veil being torn that we can now know the truth and be the truth and be transformed into who God has created us to be. And it and and and I think too this is like a super macro like this is huge, this is wild, but today I really want this message to like mean something on Monday. And so I I'm I'm going to try to be more practical. So is anybody taking notes today? If you take your phone out and you're taking notes, I'm just going to assume you're taking notes, not texting somebody. Come on, somebody. But again, this is why the Holy Spirit desires to dwell in us because he wants to change our very DNA and and like to break off all of the generational curses that you feel like you've been walking in. He wants to break off all of the patterns that you've been going back and forth in. He wants to take your life and radically shift it to where we become like him. that every time that we encounter God, we become more like him. Again, like the verse said, we go from glory to glory to glory. We're being transformed into his image. Can we be a church where God says, "I don't want to leave this place." Are we desiring to please God when we come into these moments, or are we really just focused on trying to please others? Are we trying to please people or are we truly coming here to please God and encounter him? Because I one of the things as we as we get into this like I think sometimes we we compromise the purpose of the church which is to encounter him and to be that dwelling place for him because we're trying to either we're trying to grow the church or we're trying to have friends or we're trying to make this a fun community. And for me like like what happened last week during worship. I want that every single week. If you were here last week, we just had this this powerful moment where the presence of God shows up and we just had to stop and God was moving. People were were on their knees. They're praying and and God is speaking. There was repentance that took place. There was a freedom in this house. And I think if we're so focused on trying to impress people, we'll miss out on the opportunity that we have to grow in God. So he desires purity. He desires unity. My first point today, imitate Jesus. Study his life and actions. Guys, I have a four-point message today, which is wild. Ephesians 5:1 says, "Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children and walk in love as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. So in order for us to be imitators of God, we have to know how he act, how he acts. We need to know his character." And the best way that we can find that and find out how he works, how he lives, how he acts is reading through the gospels. Like if you want to know how Jesus would act in a certain situation, like read your read your Bible, read the gospel. Like live the same way as Jesus lived and we be imitators of him. Did Jesus forgive you? Great. So forgive others, right? Does Jesus love you? Yeah. Great. So start loving others. You know, like if we would start to live like Jesus, so many of the issues that we face in life would shift drastically, right? Like like this is the if you want to be a better husband, like be like Jesus. If you want to be a better wife, like be like Jesus and and and and study through the gospels. It's not like you're not going to find the truth in some like quippy phrase on a on a Tik Tok or podcast. You're going to find the truth in the word of God. That's it. And I think so often we're trying to find something that's that's that's fun or entertaining and and then we look at the word and we're like this is so boring. But if we would look at the life of Jesus as the blueprint and the road map to how we should live our lives, like this gets really exciting really fast where it's like I know how to live now because this is the plan. He is the plan again to follow the narrow way of Jesus. It's about walking in love like Christ love. And I think it's so important too like there there's there's all there's all these moments, you know, right at the beginning of this Paul says therefore. Remember the therefore word. Therefore means everything that I've said up to this point because of this. Now do this. If we're not continuing to study the therefore, if we're not continuing to study the life of Jesus and how he lived, how can we how can we actually live this out, right? If we're only learning about Jesus when we gather together on a Sunday morning and then expect that we're going to act like him throughout our Monday through Saturday. Like, in my opinion, I think we're cooked. Like I think I think about this like I I had a job years ago and my first day they came in and they slammed this manual down. Had anyone ever been in a job like that? I was like here's the manual. Here's everything you need to know. There's no orientation. This is the orientation. Read this. Everything you want to know about this job and everything you want to know about your benefits package and all all the things that you have access to now. You got to read this. And if you and if you don't read this, like I'm sorry, but like you're you're going to end up getting fired because you're going to do something wrong without realizing it. And there's this expectation that if you're going to have this job, you need to read the manual. And it's the same thing for us. Like we we need to continue to go through and read the Gospels. We need to meditate on his word. We need to let the truth again of what Ephesians 1 through3 is talking about with this this access that your sons and daughters and all all these things that we've been touching on. There's there's so much so many powerful words. Like there were a couple verses in Ephesians 3 that I just wanted to teach on for the whole month because it's so deep and it's so powerful. Like we have to hold on to these things and let it change us. And I was going to say if you're if you're looking for a specific plan uh to go through the gospels, uh one that I found is really great is actually from Joel Marbett, Joel and Liam Marbbit missionaries to to Ecuador. They they put it together. It's called 393. Um it's a 90-day study through the Gospels and the Psalms. And so every day you're reading portions of scripture, you're reading Psalms, and then there's like breakdown questions and ways that you can meditate on what you just read. It's super super helpful. and it's free. And if you'd like to have access to it, holler at me and I will get it to you. Moving on in Ephesians 5 verse three, but sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you as is proper among the saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor foolish talk, nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure or is covetous, that is an idoltor, has no inheritance in the kingdom of God, the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Number two, remove impurity and idols out of the dark. Purity and devotion. Again, we kind of talked about coveting and covetousness last week, but it really is an idol. when when we're in this place of always wanting more and nothing is this is never going to be enough. It's like this obsession that we have and and we make things into an idol like money probably being one of the greatest ones that we struggle with is like I if if I had more money you know then I could do all of these things or like if the money was wasn't this way or that way like and and then we start making decisions based off of just the money and rather than going to God like it becomes an obsession right or we can become obsessed with entertainment or we become obsessed with control and we have to control all these things in our lives or we become obsessed with with pleasure pleasure and and and things that get me excited and adventurous or we get focused on distractions because we're not happy with how our lives are lining up in that moment and we make those things into an idol whether we realize it or not. Anything that replaces God is an idol. Anything that you have to check with before you check with God is an idol. Everyone who is sexually immoral or impure or who is covetous covetous that is an idoltor and has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Now here's here's what's fun. All right, everyone take a deep breath because I read this verse and I was just like I'm cooked because I've sinned. I've sinned in in a lot of different ways, you know. I've I've been an idoltor. I have not always been pure, right? But just because I I sin does not mean I'm I'm cooked and I can't inherit the kingdom. What it's talking about here, it's not just committing one of these these sins and then you're cut off. It's talking about your way of life. If you're choosing to live in hidden sin and habitual sin and it's inside of you, if you continue to sin in the dark when you think nobody else is watching and nobody else is looking and that's part of your lifestyle, that cycle, that's what he's talking about. He's talking about when you continue to live in sin, but you profess God as as savior. It's like I love Jesus. I go to church. I read my Bible, but I'm still addicted to pornography. You know, I I I'm I love Jesus. I go to Bible study. You know, I'm all these things, but I'm a drunk. I continue to engage with sinful activity, but still continue to claim that I'm a son of God. It's talking about that hiddenness. And and it's really funny because I was thinking about like I think sometimes we turn off our brain or or the fact that like God is always watching us and we start to think that like he doesn't see me when I engage in gossip or he doesn't hear me when I'm slandering or he doesn't hear me you know when I'm cussing under my breath or you know he doesn't see all these things. It it you know as if he's just this guy up in the clouds right? It's kind of funny. I was thinking about has anyone seen The Truman Show with Jim Carrey? Anybody? Yeah, great movie. Um, basically he lives his whole life from from birth where he's being watched and he is a television show. They like build this giant bubble that he lives in and he has no idea that there's hidden cameras everywhere watching his life. And it's kind of freaky when you when you think about it, but then when you turn it around and go, that's how God is watching us. like we are the Truman Show for him. We are our own like if you if you wanted to uh give off main character energy like you are the main character in your story. God's watching. But I actually I read about this the other day. Um it's called disassociative imagination. It's specifically in line with when you're online or when you're driving a car. There's like this feeling of anonymity anonymous. Like I'm not, you know, Nick Serban. I'm the guy driving the black jeep, right? And you don't know who I am. You don't know my story. You you know, so if I swerve into you and and I start getting a little ragy on the road, like that is that's separate. I'm disassociating from my reality. Or we go online and I'm not using my name. I'm using this profile and so I can say whatever I want to say and there's no consequences, right? I can like like some of the most disgusting and vile things I have ever read in my entire life are in the YouTube comment section, right? Under people like like when we post videos from Full Life, like watch out, the haters are are coming after us. And it's just like it I laugh too because it's like if you actually understood the full context of this clip, you wouldn't be freaking out about it. But it's like people are going to say what they want to say and because of this disassociative imagination, because of the anonymity that we that they think that they have, they're just going to say whatever comes to their mind and go, there's no consequence for any of this. This is just the internet. Or there's no consequence for me swerving into that person or giving this person the finger because, you know, I'm I'm just a car. like I'm not I'm not who I in those moments. And I think so often we do this with our relationship with God where we think for a moment like God doesn't see me doing this. This is just my my secret. God doesn't see me. He doesn't hear me, you know, and and and and when it all comes down to I can just come back and you know, ask for forgiveness for this. And and we live in this disassociative dichotomy where we compartmentalize our lives. Are you following me? And so again, like, is who you are in this setting the same as when you're not here? Like, is who you are when you're amongst other believers actually who you are when you're alone or with your family? Because I think so often we get really good at compartmentalizing and and separating these different aspects of our lives because the world has shown us how to do that with social media and the internet and all these things. But here's what I love in 1 John 3 says, "No one who abides in him keeps on sinning. No one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning. For God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God. And who are the children of the devil? Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. I was I was walking the other day with uh I had all of my kids around me and and Britney was was like walking behind us and this woman came up to her and I could just barely hear what she said and she's like there's no doubt that these are his kids. Like there they all look like the father. Like they all look there's no doubt. And I don't know if it was like a shot like at her or if she was hitting on me or like I don't know what was going on in that moment. I was like this is kind of weird to say that but it's like yeah I guess you know my kids look look a lot like me but I but I kind of like wonder and I wrestle with this sort of question too because it's like whenever I'm hanging out with my dad, you know, people don't always know that I'm his son because I don't look anything like him. I look like my mom. Like I people think that my mom is my sister. like when we go out places like that's that's really talking up her beauty uh more than anything. Yeah, come on. She's awesome. But it's like how can somebody know that you are a follower of God? Like is there is there like a physical evidence that you see or that you know when like when when people look at you, do they see Jesus? And I just kind of like been been wrestling with this like how can someone look like Jesus? And I think many times we go, well, I profess it. The evidence is that I'm I'm letting everybody know that I follow Jesus, right? Like I'm I'm letting I'm letting everybody know like Jesus has changed my life. Or maybe I get a tattoo of a cross, you know, where everybody can see it. Or I blast it on social media like I'm posting scriptures every single day. All these things. Or maybe you find like that perfect angel filter with a halo over your head and be like God's favorite, you know, and you post the selfie. Like maybe that's how you let everybody know that you're following Jesus. I don't know. But like it's funny because I I I hear this statement a lot and I and I've heard people like hate on it, love on it, all the things. But preaching the go preach the gospel and if necessary use words. Have you heard that before? Anybody? It's a great It's a great thing. I definitely think you need to use words. I definitely think you need to let people know what Jesus has done in your life, right? But then also back it up with your actions. Like it's one thing to profess Jesus and then keep on sinning, right? It it it's entirely different when you can say God has changed my life and here is the evidence of the fruit in my life that I want to that I want to share with you. Because again, we can't just live a life for Jesus and not tell anyone. And we can't tell everyone about Jesus and then not live it out because then we're hypocrites and then we're the reason why people don't want Jesus. And again, that's what this verse is saying that if you're a child of God claiming that and you're coming to church, but you're living in secret sin or practicing habitual sin, you are deceiving yourself and you're deceiving others. But if you sin and you repent, which is turning away completely from that sin, you are a child of God. Like if you make a mistake and you turn back to him, you're a child of God because you know you've made a mistake. You know you messed up. But it's when you keep on sinning that we're walking in impurity and immorality. We want to be pure. We want to imitate Jesus and we want to become like him. And that's why like purity is so important. And and that's really what he's talking about is like be who you profess to be with your actions. Ephesians 5 7. Therefore do not become partners with them. For at one time you were darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true. and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible. For anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. To live in darkness, but to call yourself light is lying, right? It's it's hiding. It's pretending. It's a facade." And so we have to start with exposing what's in the darkness within our own heart and life and even maybe admitting that hey I am not who I say I am all of the time and that takes humility which we've talked about in Ephesians like it takes humility to go like I am not all that I profess to be or if if if I'm going to be who Jesus created me to as as described in scripture, like I can't continue to live this way anymore. And this is where we get to come to him and repent and start exposing these things that we're hiding. And what I love so much is like God is not a God who shames you for what you are hiding. It's it's the enemy who shames us into a place where we keep it in the dark because if if this gets exposed then people are going to see me differently. If this gets exposed then then my whole world is going to change and shift. But he's saying hey what's what's what's greater you coming and living in the light or living in darkness for the rest of your life? He wants to change our hearts and it takes humility on our part to to lay these things at his feet and to let him shine the light on it. And I think many of us have one time or another, myself included, have felt like we are just dead. We come to church and we feel nothing. And we talked about it last week with callousness and and all these things, but many times we we feel dead because we are dead. And there's things that need to be brought into the light so that we can awake from our sleep as the scripture is saying here. How amazing, how amazing would it be where we could be a church where there's no shame and we could be true to one another. That when we gather, God meets us and creates this invitation for everyone to come to him and say, "God, forgive me. Would you shine a light on my heart today? I don't want to live in darkness anymore. Like there's there's so much that God has for us. Again, it goes back to this whole thing. Are we trying to please people by keeping this stuff in the dark? Or are we trying to please God? And saying, "God, you can have all of me, even the places that I'm unsure about, even the pla
