  I was talking to my my study my book study group, my small group on Wednesday and uh I was just like, man, I don't I don't know what's going on, but I feel like maybe I need to break this up into two weeks. Um because this is so deep. It's so much. Um and honestly, I was struggling all week long um until yesterday. I felt like I was like floating out in this space of like God there's so much depth here and there and and I am I feel like so shallow reading this and then everything just clicked uh yesterday evening and I threw out half of my notes and now we have hopefully what God wants to speak to us today. But let's read this um Ephesians 3 14- 21. For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory, he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his spirit in your inner being. So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. That you being rooted and grounded in love may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. That you may be filled with the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think according to the work the power at work within us. To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen. God I pray you bless this word. Speak to us today. Illuminate the eyes of our heart to understand. And Lord, help us to trust you, to take one more step towards you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. I love again what my mom hit on last week and talking about the mysteries, the the mystery that we as Gentiles, we as as non uh Jewish people, we've been grafted in to the the the covenant that that Jesus has with each and every one of us. That we can now be called sons and daughters. That we even though we were born far from God have the opportunity to say yes to him. And uh it's kind of funny because there's that whole first part of verses 1 through13 that's kind of talking about that mystery and then it takes this shift and this portion of scripture that we just read it's actually a prayer right right at the beginning it says for this reason I bow my knees before God and it begins to pray and this is a prayer for for us as a as a church as as a body and today reading through This this prayer is an invitation for us to go from knowing in our minds that God loves us to knowing in our inner being to knowing in our hearts that he loves us. Again, so often we can have the knowledge of his love. We can read it and go, "Oh, that's that's fun information for me." But to know it within our inner being is something completely different. And it's it's what can radically transform our hearts and our minds when we can embrace how holy he is. The God of the universe who spoke everything into existence. His immeasurable power is so matchless in wonder that we we cannot even comprehend it actually sets us into a state of humility and awe that transforms our lives. God is holy. We've seen that all through Ephesians so far. But also God loves us as a church and as a family as as followers of God. This knowledge could change everything for us if we can get it from here to here. It has the potential to start revival within our homes and within our churches, within this city, that we can go from just knowing it to knowing it. And it's it's so interesting and I I'll talk about this later, but like Paul in in the Greek like doesn't really have the language to describe what he's talking about because he says things like knowing and then he says things like knowing to know in our minds that he loves us but then to know within ourselves. Again, he he can't even fully declare it and speak it. But my prayer today is that we would have this moment of clarity where everything just clicks. Like I get it now. I understand it now. And when this when this when we begin to understand and comprehend his love and we are filled with the fullness of God, everything is going to change. Everything is going to shift. And it it's so much more than just praying a prayer and saying, you know, Jesus, come into my heart and life. It's more than declaring it. It's it's believing it and knowing it that he loves me and that I love him. Everything can change again. When we experience begin to experience God's love, his grace, his holiness, what used to tempt us or plague our thoughts or scratch the itch of feeling alone, it just begins to fade away. I think it was the first message that I preached in Ephesians where I talked about that that old song where the things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. It's so true. It's why you can you can be around believers, followers of Jesus, and there's just something completely different about them where they just don't care what anybody else thinks. and and and the things that would phase me and the temptations that come my way, it's like nothing. It's like they're a rock and water hitting against them. Like this is nothing because I have Jesus because I know his love. Verse 15, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. This was so cool when my mom talked about it last week of the spiritual realms and the the the families and the people that are in heaven and the and the the supernatural places, the principalities and the angels and all these things. Again, he's talking about the spiritual realm, all the people who have ever lived, all the people who will ever live, named and unnamed. But I love this verse, this portion of the verse in verse 16 where he says that according to the riches of his glory. And we've heard about the riches of his grace. We've heard about uh the spiritual blessings. And we, you know, the praise of his glory that that Paul talks about again in Ephesians 1 uh verse 17. uh father of glory may give you the the spirit of wisdom and of revelation and the knowledge of him having the eyes of your hearts enlightened that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you. What are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe according to the working of his great might. And even two weeks ago when when my mom preached in Ephesians 3, I love this in verse 12. It says, "In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him." Because of our faith, because of our relationship with him, we have access to the riches of his glory. That's so awesome. Paul begins this prayer with the assumption that we are beginning to possess and access the knowledge of God's glorious inheritance. Again, we we've read through the this first half of the letter so far, and he ends it with this prayer with the with the the assumption and the belief that that as we've read through, we've started to step out and and begin to access and know that we are sons, that we are daughters, that we now have access to to God and all of his power and all of his glorious riches, the things that he's written on our hearts before the foundation of the earth that we are just now beginning to step into it as he prays this prayer. There's this assumption that he has that that we know that we have the cheat code. Anybody any video game players in the room that that grow up playing video games? I am all about some cheat codes. Okay. Like I know I'm I'm If I can have some kind of advantage or if I can turn god mode on in a game and like not die or like be able to do all the things that nobody else can do, like I'm all about it. For me, it's it's way more fun. Like I know some people they they they get satisfied with, you know, oh, I I work so hard for this. I'm like, no, I want the cheat code. Like I just want to win, you know? I want to make this happen, whatever it looks like. But this right here for us knowing that we have this access to God is the cheat code for us. Let me explain the rest of verse 16. That according to the riches of his glory. What does it say? That he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his spirit in your inner being. Because of the riches of his glory that we now have access to, we can now access strength to overcome in our inner being. From heaven to our inner being, I have access to God's power. But how many how many Christians don't realize the power and the authority that they can walk in? We were um I told some of you this story and so forgive me. I'm going to tell it again because it was just so cool. We're flying back from Ecuador last week and uh we get to the airport 3 hours early. Our flight is supposed to leave at midnight. It's supposed to be a red eye. We're going to get back to Houston at like 5 in the morning and then back to Nashville by 9:00. And uh we had everything planned out. We get there and uh dad and I get an email from the airline saying that our flight has not been delayed, it's been cancelled. So, here we are. It's it's Friday night. We need to get back, you know, by Saturday so we can get here on Sunday and all the things. And we're like scrambling, okay, what are we going to do? All the things. Now, what's so cool is my dad with all of his credit cards and status, all of our tickets were booked on premier access. So, we were in the first class line. Our whole team, all 12 of us, it was like us and maybe two other people that were actually in this line. We had premier access because of my dad. You're some of you are seeing the analogy already forming. This is so cool. Everybody else is in line. Everybody else is freaking out. They're looking at their phones and they're, you know, some in English, some in Spanish. Like, the flight's been delayed. No, no, no. The flight's been cancelled. Look, they rebooked us on a flight for tomorrow at 400 p.m. 4 p.m. That's crazy. Yeah, because the whole airport was shutting down at 2 am until 2 p.m. for maintenance, y'all. On Saturday, like everybody flies on Saturday. Like, this was crazy. I like we're we're freaking out and we're But we're in the line. We're in Premier Access. And so, we didn't just get one gate agent, we had two gate agents taking care of all of our flights. Okay, here's what's so cool. When you have premier access, you get to fly when everybody else gets a hotel voucher. Hear me. I'm gonna say it again. Because of the access that we have to God, we get to go places that nobody else gets to go. While everybody else gets grounded, where everybody else has to to wait a little bit longer, we have access to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. And everything that this word says that we can have, we can have it. And and too many believers, too many followers of Jesus or professing followers of Jesus don't recognize the power and the authority that they have. They read scripture and we go, "Oh, that's nice. That makes me feel good." And then they continue to move on. And then when something feels bad, then they're like praying and like like they're in the ER like, "God, you need to save me." rather than praying first, rather than going to him and saying, "I can come to you, Lord, with boldness because I'm a son, because I'm a daughter, because before the foundation of this earth, you chose me. We have access. We get to fly. We get to go where nobody else gets to go because of who our father is." How cool is that? And again, so Paul, he begins this prayer with the assumption that we know this, that we're beginning to recognize it, that according to the riches of his glory, we can be strengthened, that these riches, this glory, it's here's what's so cool. It's beyond material things. This isn't some prosperity gospel teaching. It's access to strength to overcome sin and temptation. It's access to wisdom beyond our years, maturity, and understanding. It's access to transformative power that allows me to bear fruit in my life. It's access to spiritual gifts and supernatural abilities through the power of the spirit. We're not powerless Christians. It's it's access to recognizing and knowing our identity and becoming fearless and bold in everything that we do and say because of the spirit that's within us. It's access to grace and ease and favor to handle difficult situations just like Jesus did. So when we begin to pray this prayer, Jesus dwells within us and we have access to him and he begins to strengthen us for what's to come and strengthen us and preparing us for the battle that will need to take place within our flesh, within our bodies. Verse 17. So that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith that you being rooted and grounded in love. Again, so rooted in Christ that false teachings of the world and culture can't pull you up out of the ground that we can be unwavering in our faith because he dwells within us. And I love this in verse 18 again. Grounded in love, you may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth of his love. Because here's the here's the deal. Here's the rub. We need strength in order to wrestle with this knowledge because we can know his love and be filled with the fullness of him within our hearts, but we still have to fight our flesh. There are still fleshly desires within our nature, a desire to to sin and feel satisfied with the things of this world. And it's the strength that Paul is talking about here in this verse that we need in order to overcome that we need in order to fight these things. You know, it it's so funny like I feel like my theology got all jacked up as a kid because I remember talking to somebody. He's like, "Yeah, you ask Jesus into your heart and everything gets easier." And I'm like, "What are you talking about?" I mean, looking looking back now, it's like I feel like I got scammed into following Jesus that my life was going to get so much better and so much easier, right? But but scripture is telling me here like it's the knowledge of his love and and loving him that he empowers us with strength to overcome the things that we are going to face. It's going to happen, right? We we are going to face trials and and temptations, but what does scripture say? Take heart because he has overcome the world. And and if Christ is within me, now I'm an overcomer and he gives me the strength that I need in order to overcome. But here's where it takes a really cool shift. Again, we need strength in order to abide in Christ. But there's this shift. It goes from the individual to the saints. This is where it gets really fun. Again, it's not the Catholic saints that it he's talking about, but we, the body of Christ, are saints together. Somebody say, "I'm a saint." Come on. And I think this is difficult for a lot of people that call themselves followers of Jesus because the more that we unite with other believers, the more we're going to experience the presence of God. And this is what he's saying. He's saying that you may have the strength to comprehend with all the saints all the measurements of God's love, the bread, the length, the height, the depth. And so to me, I I I see this as like there are some things that I can find with the Lord on my own in my own pursuit, but there are some things that God wants to show me, and he's only going to show me when I unite with the church. It's like going to a concert where everybody knows the words to the song and everyone's like united and it's like in unison and we're all singing and it's and it's sort of this moment of like we all have this shared experience. We hear we hear the song and it's like we all even though there's maybe thousands of people in in the room, it's like we're all in the car listening to the radio at the same time. and we're all belting out the words and it we're looking around and it's like you and you and us and I don't even know your name, but we're all together and this is so great. It's like this euphoric experience that I'm going to try to recreate right now. Sweet Caroline. There you go. You felt that? You felt you the shift in the room, right? Come on. We all have this shared moment in this experience of like, I remember the time I first heard this song or I remember that baseball game or I remember that and we can all unite together. Again, we may have all had different experiences with that song, but there's unity when we come together and sing it. And I'm sorry if you didn't know that song. I apologize. Neil Diamond. It's similar, but it's even better with God. to all be in unity together as we pursue God with the same knowledge, passion, and mission seeking God. I wonder if the knowledge of God's love, grace, power for some of us has only been in our minds and hasn't shifted to our hearts because there's been division among the saints. Or maybe we've created division between us and the church. Like I'm I'm in a season right now in my life where I'm just like done with Instagram and I'm done with Tik Tok. Mostly not because of of politics. It's not because of like like horrible stuff that that pops up in my feed and all all the things. It's because of Christians. I am so done listening to Christians hating on the church. And if you're one of them, I'm calling you out today because how can you love God and hate his church? How can you love Jesus and hate his body? It doesn't make any sense because there's there's something powerful that happens. The Bible says where two or three are gathered, there he is. And that's not to to to flip it in a very weird hermeneutical way of saying, well, if I'm alone, then he's not there. That's not what that means. It just means that there's there's something tangible about his presence when we come together and we unite together in heart and mind. There there there's so much that God wants to do. There's power, strength, and understanding when we unite together. And I and I know for me personally, like I've encountered God in so many ways on my own, but the the moments that have marked my life forever have been when I've been in a room with a couple other people or in a room with with hundreds and thousands. And maybe we're all singing the same songs or maybe all of our hearts in that moment are aligned like sweet Caroline and everyone's just like bum bum bum Jesus I want Jesus and everyone's voices are lifted everyone's hands are up and there's that unity of heart it's like in the upper room with 20 it says they were united together in one accord and then the spirit of God came. There's this beautiful moment. I'm going to cry about it, but I just I just want you to to see this. Like I think sometimes we get so fixated on like conferences, concerts, and being a part of these big crowds. But uh I started filming my my brother Garrett um and Kate their worship sessions and uh it is one of the most awkward things in the world because you know we hear the the the final mixing of of of the songs if you watch them on YouTube or whatever but when you're in the room the only instrument that you can hear is the guitar and there's no effects there's nothing and it's just voices lifted and hearts aligned and it is one of the most anointed and powerful moments that that that I've encountered in my life. I remember we were filming, it was a couple months ago for their sessions because they just had a baby and so they had to get all the stuff filmed ahead of time. But I don't know what I don't know what happened other than all of our hearts aligned in the moment and I'm I'm filming. I've got like four cameras and all this stuff and I just began to sing with them very quietly because I don't want to get on the microphone. you know, you don't want to hear my voice in the background. And I just began to sing. And then all of a sudden, I hit the floor because the presence of God was there. And I want that so much for us as a church. that our hearts would be so intertwined with his and with each other that as soon as Jonathan hits the note, we're all in and the circumstances that we may be facing. I love what my mom said last week. We are not prisoners of our circumstances. were prisoners of Jesus. And when we lock in, we begin to understand the breadth, the width, the length, the depth of his love for us. And if you haven't realized it yet, like these first three chapters of Ephesians, it's all about creating unity within the body of Christ. like we're we're about to finish the first three chapters and then the next three are like here's what we get to do now. Here's how we bring unity into our lives, into our churches, into our families, and into our city. Like they turned Ephesus upside down because of this like radically changed forever because of this understanding. The blueprint for God's plan starts with us knowing his love. That heaven would come to earth. Jesus came to get heaven within us, dwelling within us, together as a church. again that we wouldn't just come to the knowledge of the fullness of God alone, but that we would find it together. Like I love when I can rub shoulders with other believers and God is speaking to them in a different way than me because I get to hear his voice through my brothers and sisters in Christ. And there's power in that. The second half of Ephesians 18 again may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth, the length, the height, and the depth of his love. Here's what's so cool. This is what changed everything. This is where I had to throw out all my notes just with this question. Does the love of Jesus have dimensions that can be measured? I see the head shaking. No. Then why did Paul choose to use this verbiage? It's it's it's almost like this again, this is going to sound really weird, but he's trying to describe again in words that he he doesn't have. He's trying to describe an indescribable thing. Charles Spurgeon said to a great many religious people, "The love of Jesus is not a solid substantial thing at all. It's just a beautiful fiction, a sentimental belief, a formal theory. But to Paul, it was real, substantial, measurable fact. The love of Jesus has height. It lifts me to heavenly places where I'm seated with Christ." that says so in Ephesians 2:6. It has width or breadth. God's river of love is so wide that it covers over my sin. It covers over every circumstance of my life so that all things work together for good for all people. It has length. Ask the question, when did the love of God start towards me and how long will it continue? It's everlasting love. And then it has depth. Philippians 2 7-8 tell us how deep the love of Jesus goes says he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on the cross. That's how deep the love of Jesus is for us. Here's what's so cool. Here's the whiteboard thing. I was uh I was studying it and I came across this really fun Sunday school drawing. Anybody been in Sunday school growing up? Take a picture. That might be the best heart I've ever drawn in my entire life. Can you see over here? This is the love of Jesus. And it has height. It has depth. It has length and it has width. It's a cross. It's kind of cute, right? For us to understand and come to understand these dimensions of his love, we have to come to the cross. But here's here's where here's where everything just like messed me up and and I'm and I'm hoping that it messes you up, too. When we observe the cross, observe when I just look at the cross, when I when I have the knowledge in my mind of the cross, right here is where I stand. I'm observing from the foot of the cross and I see the height. I see how holy he is. I see how how how marvelous and wonderful he is and I'm in awe. I I I see it. Wow. And then I think about the the the length in which he would go to save me. I think about the length in which his love covers over me. I think about the width and the breadth and how everyone has the opportunity to experience his love. And I and I see this. I see the up. I see the the out. I see the over. I see all these things. And I'm at the foot of the cross. But here's the problem. If we only observe the cross, there's no depth. If we're only standing at the foot of the cross and saying, "That's nice, God. This is so beautiful. Your love is so great. It's such a great idea." But it's only until We're hanging on the cross with Jesus do we begin to recognize the depth of his love for us. It's only when we die to self. It's only when we we we pray this prayer and say, "God, would you strengthen me to be able to be crucified on this cross with you? would you strengthen me to hang with you? Because scripture tells us that we are crucified with Christ. But so many of us, we want to stand here at the base of the cross and say, "That's really beautiful. Oh, it means so much to me what he did for me." Right? But when we put ourselves on the cross with him and say, "No, I'm going to I'm going to die to self." Galatians 2:20, it says, "I've been crucified with Christ." It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. In order for us to be in the love of Christ. In order for his love to be within us, we have to be here. We have if you want to come to the fullness of the understanding of his love, we have to be within his love. We have to abide in this place with him. And when temptation comes, when difficulty comes, I'm right here with you, Lord. And I know because you are within me, I can now access the strength to overcome. I can now access wisdom and understanding to how to handle these situations. there's grace that's given to me because this is where I am. And again, so many of us, so many believers, they stand right here and they observe it and then they wonder why God isn't moving in power in their life because you're just an observer. What would it look like if we said, "I'm going allin." Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." It's only on the cross that we recognize the depth of his love for us. It's only when we give up our life to Christ that we see what he sacrificed for us. Come on. Verse 19. And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, surpasses knowledge, surpasses the mind. It's within us. It's in our hearts. The eyes of our hearts need to become illuminated. That you may be filled with the fullness of God. Sorry, I misread that. That you may be filled with all the fullness of God. to know the love of Christ. It's not emotion and feeling. This is something to know within us. It's beyond information and beyond knowledge. And to be filled with all of the fullness, it's it's fun to be full of God, right? But to be filled with all of the fullness to where he is so within us and we are so within him that we can't even separate the two. Like I saw I saw I saw somebody do a teaching on this where they they took a sponge and they put it in water and they said the water is God and the sponge is you. When when the sponge absorbs the water, where does the water end? It doesn't. Because the water is within you. And when life comes and we're squeezed, what comes out? God. that we would be so within him and he so within us that we become something entirely different. And here's what's so cool. This is something that God desires for every single one of us. Like this is not just for the super spiritual people that you see on Instagram. I should have put bunny ears up when I said super spiritual, but like there's so many people who who think that they have some kind of special cheat code that nobody else has. But my my Bible says that we all get it. We all have access to it. Like you don't have to be some super spiritual person. You don't have to be a Bible character or a pastor or some radical like monk, you know, living on a hill somewhere. This is for all of us. And this right here is how we become like Jesus. And here's what's so cool. Jonathan, you can come. I'm wrapping up. What would happen if we took this scripture? It's a prayer. What if we took it and we prayed it? We're going to do it at the end. But what would happen if we prayed this prayer? What if instead of praying this, God, set my free of pornography addiction? Or Jesus, release this anxiety and depression. Lift these worries. God, would you give them supernatural wisdom for this tough meeting they're about to go into? Holy Spirit, would you fill their marriage with peace and unity? These are good prayers, right? But what if we prayed this instead? What if we prayed, "God, according to the riches of your glory, would you enlighten their heart to know the love of Christ, that it would strengthen their life, that the fullness of your love would transform them into a new creation, that they would recognize the access that they have to you as a son and daughter, that they would know you and be known by you again. Well, you're not praying for the issue. You're not praying for the problem. No, the the problem is that so many times the things that we're dealing with are just symptoms of hearts that don't know who they are. Hearts that don't know the fullness of his love. There's symptoms of not being fulfilled in the love of Christ. The reason that we we tend to chase after sinful things is we're not being satisfied in other areas. But if we begin to pray this prayer instead of God, deal with the symptoms, would you deal with the heart? Come on. I if we fix the heart, we fix everything. I we if we can fix this, then all of the the stuff that we're facing, it it it's meaningless. It doesn't have an effect on us anymore. If we truly knew the holiness of God and knew how much he loved us, so many of the struggles of sin we're facing would go away. And again, it's not some, come on, it's not some magic pill. It's it's a struggle. It's a it's a thing that we have to wrestle with and pursue. But maybe that's our problem. It's getting this knowledge into our hearts to actually sit with it and press pause on everything else and allow ourselves to start comprehending it. What if instead of coming into a worship gathering like this, instead of thinking about your circumstances, you just thought about him and say, 'Lord, just fill me with the fullness of your love, the fullness of who you are so that I can be changed, that I can become a prisoner of Christ, so that my circumstances no longer have me bound. And this is something we can do daily. This is what transforms us from being shallow Christians limiting God by our circumstances and lack of trust to deep radical followers of Jesus. Our perspective of his love looks different from the cross rather than just being an observer. And I love this verse 20, the ending of the prayer. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen. Charles Spurgeon said this. No language was powerful enough for the Apostle Paul. He has to coin words and phrases to shadow forth his meaning. He's able to do exceedingly exceeding abundantly. So abundant that it exceeds measure and description. [Music] John describes John describes being one with God as abiding in him. In 1 John 4:16 through8, so we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love and whoever abides in love abides in God and God abides in him. We're afraid that we're not going to be satisfied. We don't trust and we lean into these patterns and temptations because for a brief moment it satisfies something, but then we have to go into more because we're still filled with fear. So, how do we know that we're filled with the fullness of God? When we know his love, there's no fear. There's no fear. There's no fear of man.
